Chinese
Herbal Medicine—Addressing
Levels of Disharmony
Individualized Pattern Diagnosis
of
the Underlying Causes of Disease
Chinese
Medicine is the world's oldest professional system
of medicine. Herbal medicine is the most widely used
treatment method within Chinese Medicine, although
acupuncture was the first to gain wide acceptance in
the West. Most medicinal substances used in Chinese
herbal formulas are of plant origin, but mineral and
animal substances are also used. Most have very low
toxicity, especially compared to Western drugs. When
expertly prescribed according to Chinese medical pattern
diagnosis, they have no side effects, only healing
effects.
Chinese herbal medicine
is based on individualized pattern diagnosis. The pattern
of signs, symptoms, temperament, and constitution is
evaluated. A custom crafted herbal formula is prescribed
to treat your individual pattern. Treatment might include
substances that nourish Yin/Essence, harmonize organ
function, boost Qi (pronounced "Chee"), transform
stagnant substances, and calm the spirit. The formulas
are often able to balance the mind, the body, and the
spirit, and to reverse disease processes.
The traditional method
of preparing Chinese herbal formulas is as a decoction;
the herbs are cooked in water and the liquid is drunk
two or three times a day. Herbal pills, tinctures,
granules, powdered extracts, and topical preparations
are also widely used today and are highly effective
vehicles for Chinese herbal medicines.
These medicines treat
the full range of human disease. From colds and flus
to allergies, autoimmune disorders, cancer, and gynecological
complaints, Chinese herbal medicine can produce dramatic
results. Appropriate formulas can be determined for
children and for pregnant women.
These techniques have
been used successfully in cultures throughout the world.
The herbs are strong medicine and should be prescribed
by an expertly trained, experienced practitioner. Chinese
herbal medicine was a core component of my Master's
program in Chinese Medicine, and is a focal point in
my clinical work.
The highest action of
an herbal remedy is upon the restoration of a person's
destiny, by overcoming obstructions that cause emotional
stagnation and subsequent physical disease. Optimal
health is a blessing possible through the many facets
of Chinese Medicine. |
