Vitamin D 2000: The Sunshine Vitamin with 150 mg Calcium Hydroxyapatite
Vitamin D, “the Sunshine Vitamin”, is not really a vitamin, but a hormone made in the skin from cholesterol in the presence of UV light. Vitamin D increases calcium absorption in the intestines and also promotes calcium deposition in the bones. Long-term insufficiency can lead to muscle weakness and pain as well as an increased risk for fractures, falls, rickets and osteomalacia. It was once assumed that most people have adequate levels of vitamin D in the body, supplied by 200 to 400 IU in the daily diet and minimal sun exposure. This has turned out to be false:
- Many people avoid spending time in the sun and are not eating foods that are naturally rich in vitamin D such as fatty fish, fish eggs, cod liver oil and pastured lard.
- Many factors block the body’s innate ability to make and use vitamin D, such as: the use of sun block, a lack of adequate sunlight exposure during winter months, weak sun exposure at Northern latitudes, and having dark skin.
- Having excess body fat causes vitamin D to be stored in fat cells instead of being circulated in the bloodstream, where it is needed.

Newer research suggests that higher blood levels of vitamin D may provide protection from numerous diseases, such as: diabetes, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, depression, several auto-immune diseases and cancers of the breast, prostate and colon.
Dr. Ron’s Vitamin D contains 2000 IU per capsule–a safe dosage that is well within the upper suggested limit of 4000 IU/day set by the highly conservative Food and Nutrition Board.
When supplementing with our Dr. Ron’s Vitamin D and calcium, it is also necessary to have adequate amounts of two other fat soluble vitamins, vitamin A and vitamin K2. Both are key regulators of calcium in the body. Research shows that both vitamin A and vitamin K2 are involved in bone mineralization and play a role in preventing soft tissue calcification. Vitamin A is found in liver, fish liver oils and egg yolks. Vitamin K as K1 is found in plants, such as leafy green vegetables. Vitamin K2 is the form of vitamin K produced by healthy gut bacteria residing in the colon.
Dr. Ron’s Vitamin D contains 2000 IU per capsule vitamin D as cholecalciferol. Cholecalciferol is the most biologically active form of vitamin D. It is the direct pre-cursor of the active hormone calciferol. Cholecalciferol is found in foods such as fish liver oil, whole eggs and liver. Dr. Ron’s Vitamin D also includes 150 mg calcium from MCHA (microcrystalline hydroxyapatite), a unique form shown to improve bone density in clinical trials.
